According to literature data there is a correlation between the seedling growth, certain substance content and water stress tolerance (Ahmad 2009, Verslues et al. 1998, Karamanos 1995, Kerepesi and Galiba 2000). The aim is to develop a method for selecting the water stress tolerant varieties and lines in the early period of the plant breeding, using barley varieties as model species.
We examined varieties treated with PEG 20% solution, measuring early growth, proline and sucrose content. In the first step we worked out a method for predicting drought resistance. The examined parameters are result of global water stress reactions.
The laboratory examinations were executed on 20 varieties/lines in 3 repeats. Each examined traits have shown significant differences between the water stressed (PEG) and the control plants.
